(英語表現)commotion 4-1 Lesson41

[commotion]は 、「騒動、さわぎ」という意味です。

同義語にdisturbanceがありますが、こちらの方がネガティブなイメージが強いで、

commotionにはネガティブなイメージはありません。

 

例文

Her arrival caused quite a commotion.

彼女の到着が騒動を引き起こしました

例文

What’s the commotion.

何の騒ぎですか?

(英語表現)how it's going to be 4-1 Lesson39

[how it's going to be]は 、現状を渋々受け入れる場合に使う表現です。

特に受け入れる事に対して不満を持っている場合に使います。

 

 

例文

If this is how it’s going to be, I don't see how I can go on.

こんなことになっちゃったら、もうどうしていいか分からない。

 

例文

I've been tired the whole day and I realize that's how it's going to be the rest of the week.

一日中疲れてましたが、来週もそうなる事に気付きました。

例文

Is that how it’s going to be?

そんな態度とるの?(相手のリアクションに対して不満を表す)

(英語表現)get under one's skin 4-1 Lesson38

[get under one's skin]は 、「~をイラつかせるという意味です。

「皮膚の下に触れる → 神経に触る → カンにさわる」というニュアンスです。

 irritateと同じ意味です。

例文

Everything he says gets under my skin.

彼の言う事すべてに対してイライラしてしまっている。

 

 

似た表現で[under the skin]があります。

これは「本心、本音では」という意味です。

例文

I think she deesn’t like me under the skin.

本心では彼女は私の事が嫌いなんだと思う。

(英語表現)on edge 4-1 Lesson38

[on edge]は 、「緊張している」「ピリピリしてる」という意味です。

 

例文

He is on edge from fighting with Ryohei.

彼はリョウヘイと喧嘩してピリピリしている。

例文

Since the murder here ,locals have been on edge.

その殺人事件依頼、地元住民は不安な緊張状態にあります。

 

職場のピリピリした雰囲気を表現するのにぴったりの表現ですね。

(英語表現)give an inch 4-1 Lesson36

[give an inch]は 、「一歩ゆずるという意味です。

 以下の様に、否定の形で使われる事が多いです。

例文

They both think they’re absolutely right and neither one will give an inch.

二人とも自分が絶対正しいと思って、お互い一歩もゆずらないんだよ。。

 

 

以下の様なことわざもあります。

例文

Give him an inch, and he’ll take a mile.

彼は少し甘い顔をするとつけあがるからな。。。

 「インチ譲ろうとしたら、マイル取ってくんだよ!」って面白い表現ですよね!

(英語表現)put somebody on the spot 4-1 Lesson35

[put somebody on the spot]は 、「(答えにくい質問などで)~を困らせるという意味です。

日本語では「タジタジになる」という表現がしっくりきます。

 

例文

Don't put me on the spot. please.

(答えづらい質問で)困らせないでくれよ。。

例文

His children always put me on the spot at home by asking that kind of question.

彼の子供たちはいつも、そういう類の質問をしてきてタジタジだよ。

(英語表現)substance 4-1 Lesson35

[substance]は大きく分けて「物質」「本質」という2つ意味で使われます。

 

We are measuring the radioactivity of various substances.

私たちは様々な物質の放射線量を測定しています

His speech doesn’t have any real substance.

彼のスピーチは中身のないものだった

 

[substance abuse ]で「薬物乱用」という意味で使われるので要注意です。

また[man of substance]で資産家という意味になります。
